Default Changing a controller board

HiHas anybody out there ever changed the controller board on a hard drive. I have a drive that will not work but the disk spins up fine and the disk appears to be working ok. It was suggested that if I got an identical drive and swapped controller boards then the old drive may boot up fine with a bit of work.I have the new drive but the firmware on the controller board is a newer version. Will that make any difference at all? :4-dontkno The drive is a Seagate Barracuda 160Gb SATA.Thanks for any help you can offer.
