Default Problem w/WD Sata HDD on Gigabyte MB

Hi all, I stumbled on these forums while trying to find a solution to a problem I've been having with installing a sata hard onto an on board sata controller. I'd really appreciate any help you can offer because I'm out of Ideas... here it is: I recently got a WD 500GB sata hard drive to replace an older IDE/ATA? drive that is about to break. I'm just trying to add it on as a new hard drive, its not a new windows xp installation, its just to store music and videos, etc. The problem is, its just not being found anywhere when I plug it in, i have no way of accessing the drive. Its not in My computer, not in device manager. I've tried these things: - Testdisk:doesn't find it - using the software that comes with the hard drive - Data Lifegaurd tools: doesn't see it either. - Changing the setting on my mother board -Changing the sata controller function from Base to RAID - Changing boot order to include sata - Changing the data cable - Installing sata drivers: gives me an error "get install key fail" "Driver install fail" - Unplugging my Maxtor drive [this is the one i'm replacing] and only using the main drive and sata drive. This is what I do know: -The hard drive is spinning -Sata controller is enabled [its onboard] -The function in the mother board setting for sata controller is currently set to "Base" - I'm not able to install the sata driver for some reason? This is my computer: Gigabyte motherboard: GA-7N400 pro Processor: AMD 3000XP not overclocked 300[350?] watt power supply RAM: 1 GB Main C drive - Seagate 120 GB IDE - on its own cable Second Drive - Maxtor 160 GB IDE - on its own cable I don't know what else to do... I know obviously the driver wont install, but i'm not sure if it is already installed? I'm out of ideas. I'm not sure if this is more of a motherboard problem or a hard drive problem, sorry if its in the wrong section.
