Default So I probably won't be able to recover these files?

My mom got rid of a computer we had a few weeks ago which had some files on it I'd now like to get back. She had an external western digital hard drive which doesn't work anymore and she doesn't care to get it fixed. But she had prior used the "WD Synch" hard drive synchronization program which came with it to store lots of files (she can't explain to me in an understandable way what function of this program she used, she saved all of the "files" by which I think she means either files other than programs or everything except which came with windows) from this computer. It broke a bit before she changed computers so I just transferred everything she wanted to the new computer over the LAN.The problem is that the files I want from the old computer had been deleted, but probably not overwritten since the computer wasn't used all that much and it hadn't been that much time. This is a long shot,* but is it possible that when the WD synch program scans the hard drive for whatever files its supposed to save that it looked for and saved deleted files as well as regular ones?* I'm not that computer savvy but I understand that there is a windows based directory for organizing files that deleted files would be invisible to; as well as a "F.A.T." directory that organizes deleted files as well. It seems to me that it'd probably only scan for and save undeleted files because to look for the deleted files it'd have to be specially programmed that way. Am I correct?
