Default myth or fact about HDD spin up?

I've always heard that the turning on a spinning up of a hard drive puts the drive under the same amount of stress/wear and tear of leaving it running normally for 10 hours. I don't believe this, otherwise companies wouldn't make hard drives that go into power save after 10 minutes of idle. But a lot of people have been telling me this lately. I've found some comments about it on the internet too, but nothing verifiable. Anybody know anything about this and where I can read some reliable articles on the subject?
